How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

If the thought of being in front of a camera makes you nervous, you are definitely not alone. Almost every couple or client tells me some version of, “We’re awkward in photos” before their session starts and honestly, that’s completely normal. The good news is you do not need to know how to pose perfectly to have beautiful photos.

Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

The best photos usually happen when you stop thinking about where the camera is and start focusing on the person beside you. Talk, laugh, move around, hold hands, whisper something funny, those real interactions create the most natural images. Your session is less about perfectly posed moments and more about capturing connection.

Movement Helps Everything Feel Natural

One of the quickest ways to feel stiff in photos is standing completely still and wondering what to do with your hands. That’s why I guide my sessions with movement like walking together, spinning, hugging, playing with your dress or hair, dancing, or snuggling close. Movement keeps your session feeling relaxed and helps create candid moments naturally.

Wear Something You Feel Good In

Confidence makes a huge difference in photos. Choose outfits that feel comfortable, fit well, and still feel like you. If you’re constantly adjusting straps, pulling at clothing, or wearing something unfamiliar, it can make you feel more tense during your session. When you feel comfortable, it shows.

Trust Your Photographer

You do not have to know what to do, that’s my job. I’ll guide you through prompts, movement, posing, and natural interactions the entire time. Most clients start off nervous and end the session saying, “That was actually so much easier than I expected.”

Stop Chasing Perfection

The photos people usually love the most are rarely the perfectly posed ones. It's always he laughter after a bad joke, the way you naturally look at each other, or the wind blowing your hair. Those are the moments that feel real.

Give Yourself Time to Relax

It’s completely normal to feel awkward during the first few minutes of a session. Most people need a little time to settle in and warm up in front of the camera. By the end of your session, you’ll likely forget the camera is even there. At the end of the day, your photos are not about being perfect models. They’re about capturing your personality, your connection, and this season of life exactly as it feels right now.
