What to Wear for Photos That Feel Timeless
One of the biggest questions I get before sessions is: “What should we wear?” And honestly, what you wear can completely change the feel of your photos. The goal is never to look overly trendy or perfectly matched. It’s to feel comfortable, confident, and like you.
Start with Neutral + Earthy Tones
Soft neutrals and earthy colors tend to photograph beautifully in almost every setting. Think of the colors like cream, beige, white, sage green, soft blue, brown, and dusty rose.
These colors keep the focus on connection and emotion instead of distracting from the moment.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Instead, choose colors that complement each other. Mixing textures, tones, and layers creates more depth and movement in your gallery.
A good rule is to pick 2 or 3 main colors. Build everyone’s outfits around those tones
Avoid Large Logos + Busy Patterns
Small patterns can work occasionally, but large graphics, neon colors, and busy prints can pull attention away from your faces and emotions in the photos. Simple is almost always best.
Dress for Movement
Flowy dresses, layered outfits, jackets, hats, and textured fabrics photograph beautifully because they add movement and dimension. If you feel good moving around in your outfit, your photos will naturally feel more relaxed and candid.
Think About Your Location
Your outfits should fit the vibe of your session:
Downtown sessions → more modern/stylish looks
Field or nature sessions → soft neutrals and earthy textures
Studio sessions → clean and minimal
Beach sessions → lighter tones and breathable fabrics
Most Important: Wear Something That Feels Like You
The best photos happen when you feel comfortable. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something that doesn’t feel natural, it’ll show in the photos. And if you ever need help deciding what to wear, I’m always happy to help style your session or give outfit feedback before your shoot.
